An art contest to honor the greatest captain to ever command the Enterprise… Jean Luc Picard!

View the inspiration here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiKwAS1qaCk

Here is the idea… a bunch of people gather at Floating World Comics with some awesome Captain Picard themed art that they made. Captain Picard paintings. Captain Picard scultpures. Captain Picard interpretive dances. Then we stand around saying holy crap, this is great, what a wonderful world I live in that there is this much Captain Picard themed art. Then some prizes are awarded:

First Prize: $75 gift certificate to Floating World Comics, $25 gift certificate to Guardian Games, $10 gift certificate to Ground Kontrol
Second Prize: $50 gift certificate to Floating World Comics, $15 gift certificate to Guardian Games
Third Prize: $25 gift certificate to Floating World Comics, $10 gift certificate to Guardian Games
As well as four honorable mentions each receiving a comics prize pack.

Afterwards, the winners will be invited to have their works of art put on display (and if they want, sale) at Floating World Comics.

A message from CPD founder, Zach Auburn:

A few weeks ago I was watching the episode that has Riker’s first captain (aka a Mr. John Locke!!!), and they have to track down and recover their old ship that had an illegal interphasic cloaking device. What I had forgotten about this episode was that there is a scene in the beginning where Picard has to judge an art contest where all the children of the Enterprise make Picard art projects.

I saw this and thought “Wow, wouldn’t it be great if there was a Captain Picard Day in the real life?” And then I decided to be the change I wanted to see in the world.

This October we are very proud to present local author Craig Thompson in celebration of the release of his highly anticipated new graphic novel, Habibi. Craig has also curated an exhibit of Habibi inspired artwork by the following artists: Mike Allred, Aaron Renier, Carson Ellis, Farel Dalrymple, Jen Wang, Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, Lark Pien, Theo Ellsworth and Tom Hart.

Sprawling across an epic landscape of deserts, harems, and modern industrial clutter, HABIBI tells the tale of Dodola and Zam, refugee child slaves bound to each other by chance, by circumstance, and by the love that grows between them.

At once contemporary and timeless, HABIBI gives us a love story of astounding resonance: a parable about our relationship to the natural world, the cultural divide between the first and third worlds, the common heritage of Christianity and Islam, and, most potently, the magic of storytelling.
