This November, Ryan Sands and Angie Wang will join us for a special art exhibit and release party for THICKNESS #2.

THICKNESS is a new anthology series of erotics comics, curated and published by Michael DeForge and Ryan Sands. The issue also features a masterful body swap tale by Michael DeForge, an extended and illicit teacher/student tale by Lisa Hanawalt, and a an epic and playful Dirty Pair parody/erotic retelling by Brandon Graham. This October we are very proud to present local author Craig Thompson in celebration of the release of his highly anticipated new graphic novel, Habibi. Craig has also curated an exhibit of Habibi inspired artwork by the following artists: Mike Allred, Aaron Renier, Carson Ellis, Farel Dalrymple, Jen Wang, Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon, Lark Pien, Theo Ellsworth and Tom Hart.

Sprawling across an epic landscape of deserts, harems, and modern industrial clutter, HABIBI tells the tale of Dodola and Zam, refugee child slaves bound to each other by chance, by circumstance, and by the love that grows between them.

At once contemporary and timeless, HABIBI gives us a love story of astounding resonance: a parable about our relationship to the natural world, the cultural divide between the first and third worlds, the common heritage of Christianity and Islam, and, most potently, the magic of storytelling.

“An assaultive, erotic riot of sex and combat and horror and sheer image-making power. There’s great beauty in The Wolf’s blackness.” –Sean T. Collins

Los Angeles artist Tom Neely will appear at West Coast book stores this fall to read from and sign his new graphic novel, The Wolf.

The Wolf  tells a simple love story,  but one woven with surrealist horror, werewolf lore and its own brand of nightmare logic. With The Wolf, Neely progresses from the traditional cartooning style he showed off in his previous books, The Blot and Brilliantly Ham-Fisted, to a form that blends comics-style storytelling with a fine arts approach to imagery. The ultimate effect is equal parts touching and chilling.

WHAT: The Wolf art exhibit and book release

Neely’s paintings and illustrations have been featured in galleries all over the U.S., in magazines and literary journals, and on records, posters and CDs for bands like The Melvins, ISIS and Wolves in the Throne Room, Groovie Ghoulies, among others. Earlier this year, he garnered a flurry of attention as one of the authors of the cult hit mini-comic Henry & Glenn Forever. Neely’s debut self-published novel, The Blot, won an Ignatz Award in 2007 and made it onto several of the industry’s “best of” lists that year, including “Best Comics of the Decade” in The Comics Journal.

Dylan Williams would never ask any of his friends to do a benefit like this. Not his style. Sorry Dylan, I know you said no gifts, but your friends love you too much and you’re just going to have to accept this present.

A few days ago Tom Spurgeon and others sent out a call for people to support Dylan by buying Sparkplug Comic Books. When I heard how serious the situation was I felt shock and sadness. Felt a little helpless, then I think yesterday we all got the same idea at the same time. Gotta do something to help our friend. A friend emailed me last night about putting together an art fundraiser show which I’ll start organizing this weekend and I’ll have more info on Monday.

In the meantime we’re going to have a benefit sale at Floating World next Monday and Tuesday, August 29th – 30th.

We’re going to donate 100% of our proceeds from those two days to Dylan’s medical care. We’ll have a special section of Sparkplug books for you to check out but the sale includes everything you buy on Monday and Tuesday.
